Water Hardness

Some continental waters are generally framed as freshwater and studied as so, though they present small concentrations of metal salts, i.e. some salinity. Therefore they should be considered as waters of "low salinity". These waters are going through soil transporting calcium carbonate, magnesium and sodium, among other salts. Calcium carbonate for instance is the responsible for the formation of stalactites and stalagmites in caves.

Hardness is a characteristic of water due to the presence of magnesium and carbonate ions. Hardness is an important property to establish the amount of detergent one must use in washing machines.

Softeners used in washing machine’s detergents use exchange resins to remove these ions from the water (see image).
